Welcome to the Nativity Robotics Program!
The Robotics program immerses children in real-world science and technology challenges. Nativity participates in FIRST LEGO League (FLL). FIRST is an acronym for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” This is a worldwide organization with over 200,000 students participating in over 60 countries from around the world. Teams design their own solution to a current scientific question or problem and build autonomous LEGO robots that perform a series of missions. Through their participation, children develop valuable life skills and discover exciting career possibilities while learning that they can make a positive contribution to society.
The Robotics season begins in late August and runs through the middle of December. Signups begin in late Spring for the following Fall school year. The program is available for students in grades 4 through 8. The teams may consist of students from multiple grades, and each team can have a maximum of 10 students. The number of teams created each season is dependent upon the number of students that sign up.
The team practices once a week on Sunday afternoons for two hours in the Nativity cafeteria. Attendance at all practices is mandatory, and advanced notification of absence for illness or family obligations is requested. Practice times are sometimes shifted earlier or later to avoid conflicts with soccer games. Near the end of the season it is not uncommon to schedule extra practice time in order to prepare for the tournament. There are no weekly “games.” Teams work towards an end of season tournament.
Attendance at the tournament is mandatory. There will inevitably be conflicts with soccer, basketball and volleyball. At tournament time it is expected that robotics will be your priority to attend. Teams will attend one local tournament, which is held in December. Based upon local tournament results teams may be invited to attend the Cincinnati Regional tournament in January, and then the Ohio State Championship tournament in February based on the results of the Regional tournament.
Students get to design, build, test and program robots using LEGO Mindstorm NXT robot kits using real-world math and science concepts. The students will research challenges facing today’s scientists, learn critical thinking skills, team-building, and presentation skills. The teams use expensive laptop computers and robotics kits. It is expected that students will handle the equipment with respect and maturity. No game playing on the computer will be tolerated.
Registration and Fees:
Registration for Nativity Robotics will be done online. Announcements for registration dates will be broadcast via the Nativity School weekly newsletter. There is an annual $50 Boosters fee per family. The registration fee for Robotics is $40 per child for each season.

FLL Scoring Rubric
- Research Project (25%) – Determine topic, research, create, and document an innovative presentation for regional tournament and community presentation.
- Core Values (25%) – Work as a team to accomplish all assigned tasks exhibiting “Gracious Professionalism” towards all team members and other teams as well.
- Robot Design and Programming (25%) – Using agreed upon strategy design and build a robot, associated attachments, use sensors, and write programs that will combine and complete as many missions as possible.
- Robot Performance (25%) – Three tries to score as many points as possible in 2.5 minutes.
