by A.K. The life of a first grader is awesome because everything is fun. In first grade we do a lot of work. We do Math and Reading. We also enjoy centers and playing Sparkle with our spelling words. We go to Music, Art, and Gym. First grade is fun! Mrs. Foster teaches Reading, Spelling, Language arts, and Science. Mrs. Burwinkle teaches Math, Social Studies, and Religion. We also have a Music teacher (Mr. Bieting), an Art teacher (Mrs. Berger), a Librarian (Mrs. Thies), a Band instructor (Mr. Laterbach), and a Physical Education instructor (Mr. Arboghast). Each day, we divide into Blue and White Groups. Blue and White Groups are when both classes mix together and divide into two groups. Mrs. Burwinkle takes one group, Mrs. Foster takes the other. We stay in Blue and White groups for about an hour. During the day we usually have Science, Religion, a class meeting, or a special. In Music class we learn to play the Recorder, in P.E. we have Physical Fitness tests, in Art we do a lot of interesting projects, in Library we check out books, and if you would like, you can join the Band. From 11:20 to 12:00 we have recess and lunch. Recess and lunch are both about 20 minutes long. The projects we do are usually challenging, long-term, and fun. We have class novels (the first one is Maniac Magee), habitat boxes, posters, and essays. Most of these projects are assigned in groups. In the afternoon we switch Blue and white Groups. In fourth grade we go on lots of field trips. In the beginning of the year we go to a Fort Ancient Indian Village, called Sunwatch. We get to go inside the houses and see what it was like at that time. During the year we go on other field trips, like the Symphony. If you choose to be a fourth grader at Nativity, I’m sure you will like it! A Day in the Life of the Fifth Grade Welcome to Nativity School! A fifth grader’s day is fun, but busy. Pretty much after every period we are switching classes. Almost every class at this school is fun. On the first day of school, you get our seats assigned seats and lockers. We may also be assigned into our 5-1 or 5-2 group. These groups mix the two fifth grade classes. Every day we have four periods with these groups. We have two periods of math and science and two periods of language arts and reading. On one day every week we will have three periods of math and science. We start our day at eight o’clock. In between eight o’clock and nine o’clock, we are in our classrooms getting ready to start the day. I am in Miss Bennett’s class, so we also start the day with daily oral language. (D.O.L.). Our first period is different every day. Sometimes we’ll start with math and science. Other days we’ll start with language arts and reading. And on other days we’ll start with religion. It all depends on what class and group we are in! Our second period also depends on what class and group we are in. On most days, our third period is a class like P.E., art, or music. Our fourth period is lunch and recess. On a sunny day our recess is outside. If it is rainy or had just rained, our recess is inside. We have a fifteen-minute recess and a twenty-minute lunch. The sixth period is pretty much like all of the other periods (but different classes). The seventh and eighth periods of the day are usually grouped together. The two classes at the end of the day are usually in our 5-1 and 5-2 groups. They are the classes of science and math or language arts and reading which is the class you didn’t have at the end of the day. My day at school is not always like this. Sometimes we have assemblies to welcome children and staff from schools around the world. Recently, we hosted International Projects Week. We were the first school in the U.S. ever to host it. We had children from Hungary, Germany, The Netherlands, and Russia. They stayed with families from our school for one week! My day as fifth grader is always fun and different. I love Nativity and will never have a better principal than Mr. Herring. He runs a Blue Ribbon school and is a National Distinguished Principal. Hope to see you soon around Nativity—it’s a great place to be!
The first thing we do is go right to Music class. We sing songs with Mr. Beiting, our music teacher. After music we go back to our classroom and learn about Ancient civilizations in Social Studies class. After Social Studies, I stay in the same classroom for Science class. We do fun projects for every unit in Science. The next period, we split into Math groups. One group goes back across the hall for Religion, but I stay in the room for Math. We learn many different Math skills. The next period is Recess!! We have Cornhole Tournaments, play Tag, and Four Square. Recess is a great time to time to talk, have fun and just run around. The next half of the day is my favorite part of the day. I love lunch time. It is the perfect time to sit by your friends and laugh, chat, and eat! After lunch, I have SSR, Silent Sustained Reading. During SSR, we get to catch up on reading our Accelerated Reader books or just read a book for fun. After SSR, I have Religion class. We learn a lot about the bible, bible characters, and of course, God. Language Arts comes next. Besides the Special classes, Language Arts is my favorite subject. We write stories and learn a lot of Spelling words. After Language Arts, I go to Library. Library is a lot of fun. We get to hear stories, check out books and talk quietly to our friends. Mrs. Theis is a lot of fun and is really nice. When I get back from Library, it is almost time to go home. We say afternoon prayers, pack up our backpacks, and head on home. Monday is my favorite day of the school week. It is so much FUN!!
