Eurocamp 2007

Team USA headed to the Hartz Mountains of eastern Germany to join delegations from 15 different nations for 10 days of fun at Eurocamp 2007. Making friends, going on field trips and playing games filled the days we spent there as we shared information about Cincinnati with students from all the different nations on the International Plaza.

Students from Nativity and St. Ignatius represented the USA at Eurocamp 2007, an international summer camp in Germany that welcomed delegations from 15 different nations for 10 days of fun, sight seeing, and friendship building. This year students from St. Ignatius and Nativity made up Team USA, nine students (4 from St. Ignatius, 5 from Nativity) accompanied by Bob Herring (Principal at Nativity) and Katie Barney (Teacher at St. Ignatius).

For the most part English is the common language, so making friends was not a problem. Our students got to know those from Austria, Israel, South Africa, Hungary, and Latvia rather well. The use of English and the proximity of the cabins resulted in free time spent together. Team USA took the silver medal in the volleyball competition!

Eurocamp began 10 years ago as an effort to provide young people with opportunities to build friendship across national and cultural lines. Throughout the 10 days delegates engage in a variety of activities designed to bring them together to build those relationships. Within the first several days delegates planned an International Festival which featured booths designed by each nation whose purpose was to showcase their county. Each group camp prepared to share a dance at the “Kids for Kids” show later in the week. Activities included field trips to Quedlinburg (a city in the former East Germany that has a significant number of buildings from the late Middle Ages) and Magdeburg (the capital of Saxon Anhult).

The members of Team USA are unanimous in their recommendation that anyone who has the opportunity to attend Eurocamp should take advantage of it.

Eurocamp Through the Eyes of Our Delegates

USA and Austria

I met many new people at Eurocamp.  They all have something in common with us and everyone is always willing to learn more about other cultures.  I hope to keep my new friends for many years to come.  On a scale from on to ten (ten being the best), Eurocamp was a forty!  I’m definitely going to try to come back next summer.

At first I was afraid that people might judge me just for being an American, but everyone loved us for who we were.  When you talked to people from different countries, you learned to forget about the accents and differences.  On the sports day, we had a sort of “competition” and everyone cheered for everyone.  When we got our awards, everyone was happy for those people.

I though it was cool to go the only Catholic church in Germany with mushroom pillars.  I wish we could have been able to stay to see the light come through the window and touch the altar on August 13, but it was exciting to be in a thousand year old church.  I also though that seeing the different dances from all over was cool. I really liked the music they played.

I learned so much already and have many great memories.  I want to learn more and make more great memories next year.  Eurocamp was awesome!

As time went on, we meet many friends.  It is nice to know that I have friends that live in Austria, Germany, Latvia, South Africa, Israel, Ukraine, Vietnam, the Dominican Republic, Hungary, Kazakhstan and many more countries.  But throughout the trip, you still met more people, and you started to become really good friends with everyone.  So, by the time we had to go, everyone starts to cry because we are so attached.  During the trip it’s good to get e-mail addresses and phone numbers from people.

I would most definitely recommend this to someone because it is a once in a lifetime trip and feeling.  You get to go places you never though you would go to.  You get to see things you never thought you would see.  And the people were just wonderful.  Most of the time you are doing something like crafts, sports, trading and some free time, but you are mostly busy.

I came to Europe / Eurocamp because I thought it would be a good experience to meet with kids from all over the world.  The kids I met at Eurocamp are kids I will never forget.  I also loved that when we went shopping, we went with the whole Eurocamp – all 280 of them.  Some of the people I met were from the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Ukraine, Austria, Israel and Vietnam.

I was nervous at first about meeting all these new kids.  But what I discovered when I got there was that everybody was nervous, and that you just had to bake the first step and start talking to people.  Some of the most memorable times were Olympic Day, shopping days, and when we went around to cabins and traded things.  Those things made memories I’ll never forget.

When I first got to Eurocamp, it was nothing like I expected it to be.  It was smaller, the cabins were talked about as through they were bigger, and the snack shack actually as bigger than I thought it would be.  But despite all those things, I still wouldn’t have changed anything about my experience at Eurocamp.  I met too many good friends to want to change anything.  So to wrap up my Eurocamp experience, I loved it and I will recommend it to kids looking to travel.

I came to Eurocamp to make new friends, learn about other countries, and to have fun.  I made friends from Austria, Germany, Israel, the Dominican Republic and South Africa.  I learned different things about different countries, like what school is like, what music they listen to, and what their religion is.  I also had so much fun I want to go again.

I think my favorite things that we did was sports day.  There was basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball toss, long jump, hundred-yard dash, and the obstacle course.  All together we go 2nd place for volleyball.  The last day of camp was fun too.  We went to the disco. After that, there were fireworks.  They were awesome!

I never regretted my decision to come and I never will.  This is the best and most exciting thing I have ever done. I could never forget it.  If you are thinking about going, just go.  This was a life changing experience.

I went to Eurocamp to meet people from all over the world.  I also went because I love Germany and I wanted to go back. I would gladly go back again.  I would suggest that the people reading this should go.  I had a great time.

I met people from all over and learned about their cultures.  I met South Africans and learned that they go to school all year long.  They smile a lot.  I met two girls from Ukraine.  Those two girls always gave hugs.  The Austrians I met are very nice.  I also met kids from Germany7, the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Israel, Hungary, Russia and many more nations.

We did a lot of things.  We trade things.  We went to many different towns and went shopping.  We played on a playground with a swing, a log, and chairs.  Then we played with the kids from other countries.

Overall Eurocamp was a great experience and I would gladly go back and met new people and have fun.

I wanted to come to Eurocamp because I wanted to meet kids form other countries and learn about them and their cultures.  When we first arrived I did not know what to expect. But then, when we got settled, I really had a great time. I liked going to different cities and meeting new people.  The food was good enough and there was always something new t to.

It feels like those 10 days went by so fast and I wasn’t ready to leave.  I made good friends with the kids from the Dominican Republic, Austria, Ukraine, and Germany.  I’ll be sure to keep in touch always and will never forget the awesome times I had with my new international friend.

I would most definitely go back to Eurocamp. I want to too!  I would totally recommend going if you ant to have the best 10 days ever.  I think kids should be able to have as much fun as Team USA did when we played on the swing, long and hung out at the Snack Shack.  Of course, I expected to have fun. But I ended up having more than fun.  My experience at Eurocamp was totally awesome and so fare the mot fantastic time of my life.

Eurocamp 2007 was definitely the most fun thing I did this summer out of a lot of things this summer.  I met many friends right off the bat, which is essential in this wonderful experience.  The thing that I loved the best was that we were never standing still.  We were always doing something whether it was the Olympic Day or going into the many
towns we went to or us the free time we had every day.

There were so many tings that I liked about Eurocamp that I is hard to write about in a few short paragraphs.  If you like activities such as arts and crafts, swimming, playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, and beach volleyball, meeting new friends, dancing and playing around on play sets and going to discos, then those are just some of the few things that you will find when you go to Eurocamp.

Also, when we go into all the different owns, you will have the opportunity to off with the friends you have met. We also got to go to museums and rid eon a trains.  I would highly recommend Eurocamp to anyone who is looking for a great time and an opportunity to meet new people.  It was one of the most fun times I have ever done.

Eurocamp was an amazing experience.  I met tons of new friends, had many fun times with those friends, and it was much much more fun than I thought it would have been. I would definitely want to do it again.

About all the friends I made, they were from all over Europe and Africa. There were South Africans, Russians, Senegalese, Hungarians, Vietnamese, Kazakhstan’s and dozens of different countries.  Each one of them was nice and friendly.  They generally al played soccer, but surprisingly. Some of them played basketball land were quite good at it.

We also went to several different cities. Each one of them was a different experience but they were all loads of fun. I was very relieved to bind out that many off the people in the towns spoke English, which made things much easier.

I was so sad to leave on the last day.  Many of the friends I made cried on that night, but we eventually had to leave. I am sure that I will never forget any of these amazing people.  Eurocamp was a fantastic experience that I would love to do again.

The reason I went o Eurocamp was because I wanted to meet friends from other countries. I thought this experience would be really fun and it was.  I’m so glad I went.  I met people from Ukraine, Israel, Germany, Russia, South Africa, Latvia, Vietnam, Senegal, and the Dominican Republic.  They were all very nice. We exchange de-mails addresses and phone numbers so we can stay in touch.  We played soccer together, basketball, and went on a swing all the time.

The food there was good. We had mashed potatoes a lot, which tasted the same as ours.  Their chicken was really good; so was their salami.  They had Fanta, Spirte and Coke.  That’s mostly what we drank but heir bottles were bigger than our normal bottles.

I learned a lot form this experience.  Everyone is nice.  The Germans are very good at soccer. If you want a big glass mug, I only costs about 9 euros and I definitely want to come back next year.
