Math Placement Test
As you know from the curriculum nights in January the students in grades 5, 6 and 7 will take a math placement test this month. The fifth and sixth grade test was developed by the teachers and will cover all of the material from this year. Students may want to take some time to review concepts taught earlier in the year. The 7th graders will take the Algebra Aptitude Test which looks at thinking skills and readiness for Algebra. The results of the tests, together with scores from the quantitative section of the InView Test and the math achievement section of the Terra Novas will determine the math group for next year. The testing schedule is as follows: Tuesday, May 13 - 5th grade test; Monday, May 12th - 6th grade test; Wednesday, May 14th, 7th grade test. All of the students will take the test at the same time, in the cafeteria, with Mr. Herring proctoring the session. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Buchino or Mr. Herring.

Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis is the 2008 Coretta Scott King Book Author Award Winner, plus it is a 2008 Newbery Honor Book. (It only counts for one category in your book.) Elijah is the first free-born child in Buxton, a Canadian community of escaped slaves, in 1860. With masterful storytelling, vibrant humor, and poignant insight into the realities of slavery and the meaning of freedom, Curtis takes readers on a journey that transforms a “fra-gile” 11-year-old boy into a courageous hero. … Courtesy of www.ala.org (American Library Association website).

Student Exchange Comings and Goings
On Sunday we welcomed home the Nativity delegation from their two–week visit to Otto Hahn Gymnasium in Geesthacht, Germany. They brought with them many tales of their journeys and their new friendships made.
On Monday we said farewell and hei hei to our friends from Torkinmaki School in Kokkola, Finland. Their two-week stay here at Nativity was filled with many fun activities and all seemed to agree that it went by too quickly.
On Friday we will send the delegation from Long Cheng Middle School in Liuzhou, China on their way to the next part of their American adventure. From here they have made arrangements to travel to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles before returning home.
Thanks so much to all of the host families who opened their homes and their hearts to our visitors from China and Finland. And thanks to all the students and faculty at Nativity for welcoming the visitors into the classrooms and on the playground. The global perspective is an important part of the mission of Nativity School, and a part that requires the support of the community to flourish. We thank you for your support.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick is the 2008 Caldecott Medal winner. From an opening shot of the full moon setting over an awakening Paris in 1931, this tale casts a new light on the picture book form. Hugo is a young orphan secretly living in the walls of a train station where he labors to complete a mysterious invention left by his father. In a work of more than 500 pages, the suspenseful text and wordless double-page spreads narrate the tale in turns. Neither words nor pictures alone tell this story, which is filled with cinematic intrigue. Black and white pencil illustrations evoke the flickering images of the silent films to which the book pays homage… Courtesy of www.ala.org (American Library Association website).
Green News
Last week was Earth Day and lots of our students took part! The fourth grade classes, under the direction of Mrs. Burwinkel and Mrs. Foster, led the way by cleaning up our school campus. They all donned rubber gloves and each had their own collection bag, all provided by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful! Way to go 4th graders!!
Students in grades K through 3 were entertained and informed by a great group of high school students from Clark Montessori, who performed an Anti-Litter play called the Wartville Wizard! If they haven’t told you already, ask your students how the Wizard was able to clean up Wartville! After the play, a Cincinnati police officer spoke about litter, and the students all took an Anti-Litter Pledge.
Fact: In the city of Cincinnati, the fine for littering by an adult is $144, and applies to litter as small as a gum wrapper. In comparison, the fine for littering in Canada is $1000! Looks like we have a bargain, but unfortunately, it shows on our city streets and neighborhoods as well.
Take Action: Try keeping a small garbage bag in your car, to collect any garbage you may have. Better yet, keep an extra bag with you, and when you notice litter just pick it up! We’re all better off when our streets and sidewalks are litter-free, and everyone can make a difference!
Regarding last week’s information about lawn care, here are a couple resources. If you’re in the market for a new lawn mower, check out mantis.com for a great battery-powered push mower that’s not only quiet, but light weight as well. Lowes also carries a line of battery-powered lawn care tools, made by Black & Decker.
ReBag Update
As of last Friday, the reBags are still on back order. If you ordered and paid for bags but are tired of waiting, please contact Beth Muething (531-6128) for a refund. Otherwise, we hope to have the order before school lets out. Sorry for the inconvenience! These bags are VERY popular!
Return the Warmth
We will be collecting PET #1 plastic bottles (water, pop, juice, Gatorade etc.) until the end of May. Our first pick up weighed in at 60 pounds, and we’re judged by the number of bottles per student so we can compete with larger schools. Some parishioners have offered to collect bottles from neighbors and co-workers! All bottles can be placed in the cans located in the cafeteria hallway by the telephone. (Empty bottles only, please!) Thanks for your support!

Tenth Annual Flying Pig Marathon Sunday, May 4, 2008 Nativity has a substantial fund raising opportunity.
Water Station Volunteers – This is your chance to play a most important role (at certain points water is all that seems important) in what has become one of Cincinnati’s premier events. If you arrive before 7:30 am you should still be able to cross Erie into ample off street parking. If you will arrive after 7:30 am simply park on Rosslyn and walk the approximately 1 block to Erie.

The Cin-Liu Sister City recommends that the teacher from Long Cheng be hosted by families in three week segments. We will be looking for 10 to 15 families who would like to take advantage of this opportunity. In August the Cin-Lou Sister City representative will provide an orientation on hosting a Chinese teacher. If you are interested in hosting the Chinese teacher for 3 weeks, please contact the school office.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the Nativity Community and we hope each and every member will take advantage of it.
At the beginning of this school year, most of the 8th graders including myself were not excited to meet our new teacher, Mr. Yost. We had an amazing teacher last year, and we didn’t think Mr. Yost would even compare to him. We were proven wrong. None of us were looking forward to reading short stories, but Mr. Yost helped us find a deeper meaning in what we read then we ever have before. Mr. Yost does that with everything he teaches us. I have learned many things this year that will help me in High School, and College. But most importantly, I learned how to be compassionate towards others.
Mr. Yost organized the 4 Days for Darfur that we had at Nativity. During these days, we learned that some refugees in Darfur have nothing that we have, and they go around every day knowing that they could be killed, captured or raped at any time. Of course we felt bad for them, but what good would that do? We spent the Sunday night before our 4 days in the cafeteria, sleeping on the hard floor, with very little food or water. We brought nothing but a blanket to sleep on. We also raised $6,000 throughout February and March, to benefit the Darfurians. We want to be sympathetic, but also empathetic. We had a protest, a walk-a-thon, and many assemblies to raise awareness. Every student at Nativity wrote a letter to Senator Sherrod Brown to tell him that as Catholics, we believe that something needs to be done to stop the terrible genocide in Darfur.
Although the 7th and 8th grade played a huge part in helping Darfur, Mr. Yost played an even bigger part. He always told us that we did more then him, but we couldn’t have done it without him. He was the one who taught us all about genocide and Darfur, and he was the one who came up with this idea.
Mr. Yost helped me realize that it’s not enough just to feel sorry for someone. You have to do something to help. You have to put yourself in their shoes, so you know what it would be like to be them. Mr. Yost deserves to receive the Above All Award because he does everything with one thought in his mind: How will this help others?
