Subject – Live Streaming Nativity Mass

Dear Nativity Community:

We are excited to announce that we are now able to live stream Masses at Nativity Church! You can access the live stream from the parish homepage or by going to https://live.nativity-cincinnati.org

Thanks to the donors who’ve made this possible. Gifts to the 2020-2021 “Building Our Community” Annual Fund will help offset the cost of installing this equipment. If you have not yet made your donation, you may do so at https://www.nativity-cincinnati.org/giving/annual-fund

Why has it taken so long to be able to live stream Mass?  Planning for live streaming started back in March of this year as the pandemic first hit. However, as planning started several obstacles came up as we tried to get things up and running.

The first obstacle was the lack of internet in the back of the church. A few years ago internet was added in the sacristy to accommodate phones in case of emergency, but we had not yet gotten internet in the back of the church. To get internet from the basement to the back of the church without running a wire through the middle of the church required boring a fiber line on the Woodford side of the church at a cost of roughly $20,000. We were able to utilize the Broadband Ohio grant to cover this cost by adding an outdoor Wireless AP to the church building to provide public WiFi in the parking lot.

Secondly, we wanted to be strategic about what we purchased. We wanted a system that allowed us the most flexibility both in church and in other venues like St. Sebastian Hall for when we return to having school assemblies like the  Friendship Journey and Advent Concerts. We also wanted a system that would be easy for end-users and volunteers to run so that it didn’t rely on staff to be at all Masses or events. This took time to research our options and work with our technology partners to make sure we were getting the best system for Nativity without breaking the bank.

The final hurdle was equipment availability, installation, and setup issues. Once we determined what we wanted to install, things needed to be ordered and like most high-demand items during the pandemic, not everything was readily available. Once everything was in we worked as quickly as possible to get everything installed and worked out the kinks before officially going live.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with making sure things are running smoothly on the weekends, at holiday Masses, baptisms, or other special events. Helping others participate remotely in Mass is a great way to show that the Eucharist is truly the heart of our parish community. Please contact Rudy Gruenke, Director of Systems & Special Projects at  (513) 531-0209 or rudy.gruenke@nativity-cincinnati.org and he will help get you trained. Thank you for your continued service to our parish community.

Father Eric
