Latin Courses by Grade Level
This exploratory Latin course meets four times per week and provides an introduction to the Latin language and the Roman world. It also stresses connections between these topics and the English language and modern American culture.
Course Content
- Pronunciation (using both the Classical and Ecclesiastical methods)
- Spoken Latin phrases
- English derivatives rooted in Latin
- Singular and plural numbers for nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs
- First, second and third person verb forms of the present tense
- Latin words for animals
- Latin words for colors
- Latin words for the days of the week
- Latin numbers and Roman numerals
- Roman life
- Geography of the Roman world
- Greek and Roman gods and goddesses
- Latin mottoes and sayings (both Classical and Biblical)
- Prayer in Latin
Highlights
- Create an original cartoon on a mythological topic
- Create maps of the Roman Mediterranean
- Create a Latin family tree
This 7th grade Latin course meets four times per week and covers about half of the content included in a typical Latin I high school course.

- Pronunciation (using both the Classical and Ecclesiastical methods)
- Spoken Latin phrases
- English derivatives rooted in Latin
- Nouns of the first, second and third declensions
- Adjectives of the first/second declension
- First, second third, third -io and fourth conjugations
- Present and imperfect verb tenses
- Infinitives
- Nominative Case
- Accusative Case (direct objects, objects of prepositions)
- Ablative Case (objects of prepositions, means)
- Imperative mood
- Genitive Case
- Dative Case
- Roman life
- Geography of the Roman world
- Greek and Roman gods and goddesses
- Latin mottoes and sayings (both Classical and Biblical)
- Prayer in Latin

- Create maps of the Roman Mediterranean world
- Participate in the National Latin Exam
This 8th grade Latin course meets four times per week. Students who complete Nativity’s Latin course sequence will have encountered content comparable to what is typically included in a Latin I course at the high school level.

- The Roman regal historical regal period
- pluperfect tense and future perfect tenses
- 4th and 5th declensions
- Latin composition
- Topography of ancient Rome
- Latin mottoes and sayings (both Classical and Biblical)
- Prayer in Latin

- Create a presentation and original Latin composition on a monument of Ancient Rome
- Participate in the National Latin Exam
