Students from 7 Nations will form A Global Village in Pleasant Ridge.
Continuing its long tradition of an emphasis on global education, Nativity School in Pleasant Ridge will welcome 72 students from 6 countries for The Friendship Journey – September 28 – October 5. Delegations of 12 students and 2 teachers from China, Mexico, Ukraine, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands will join the Nativity 8th Graders in multi-national teams to work on projects in engineering, design, vocal and visual arts, and technology.
The Friendship Journey opens Monday, September 30 at 10:00 a.m. with the Procession of Nations and remarks from Vice-Mayor Roxanne Qualls, the Honorary Counsel of the Republic of Poland, Marc Dollar, and Superintendent of Catholic Schools Dr. Jim Rigg.
The goal is to build relationships across national boundaries. Each visiting delegation will visit all the classrooms K-8 sharing information about their country’s culture and traditions.
The week’s activities will include a visit to the Freedom Center and Field Day – three-legged race, water balloon toss, relay race, etc. – with teams composed of students from all nations and grades (K-8).
The Friendship Journey culminates on Friday, October 4 with the presentation of the projects and a representative from each country, using the NPR “This I believe” format, will share their perspective on the impact their generation will have on the world.
This is the third time Nativity has hosted The Friendship Journey. Previous Friendship Journeys occurred in 2006 and 2010. Nativity offers Spanish and Chinese in Grades K-8 and Latin in Grades 7-8. As part of its emphasis on global education, students are expected to be well versed in political and physical geography.
